A Sumerian Foundation Cone 1900-1600BCE

Used by Sumerians and other Mesopotamian cultures beginning in the third millenium BCE, clay nails also known as foundation pegs, cones or nails, were cone shaped pegs made of clay. Inscribed with Cunieform, baked and stuck in the mud bricks of temples and adminstrative buildings to serve as evidence that the temple of building belonged to a god or ruler.

This clay nail has 10 lines of as yet undeciphered cuneiform. Shows typical uneven wear. This is a wonderful authentic ancient artifact seldom found on the market.
