Tibetan Zan par.
18-19th century

A wooden block used in ritual healing in Tibetan Buddhist and Bon medicine traditions.
The block can be used to make barley dough (tsampa) effigies that become scapegoats for the ailments in this practice of ‘ritual ransom ‘.
Images of dieties and demons as well as animals, real and imagined, and auspicious symbols also grace the four sided mould.
Tsampa objects would be sacrificed in burning, burial or other disposal thus clearing an afflicted individual from the physical or spiritual ailment.
