An excellent antique copper anklet or dowry currency from the Mbole or the Democratic Republic of Congo estimated at late 1800s. The Mbole are a very small ethnic group from Southeastern DRC. They make copper anklet bracelets used for currency or major transactions. Formally used in the exchange of a bride as part of her dowry currency and represented their status. Usually forged onto the women's legs or ankles and worn for a lifetime. Now, strictly used as currency. This extraordinary piece is hand-hammered.
