Vintage Baga Snake, Guinea - Strange Imports
The serpent Baga symbolizes fertility unifying water and earth, this statue embodies the spirit that guards the bansonyi secret society initiation ceremonies. It is brought out before dances to purify the area. Typically, during the days preceding the initiation ceremonies, two carved Bansonyies appear in the village and are decorated with streamers and colorful banners. The two sculptures are then supported by scaffolding and carried by several men hidden under palm leaves and cloth.
The Baga people are from West Africa and live in the southern lands of Guinea Atlantic coastline. They live in rural communities and known for their agriculture and animist pieces of artwork.
