Mossi Mask, Burkina Faso, Strange Imports
This unique Mossi Mask from Burkina Faso is a unique addition to any home or antique collection. Usually commissioned by the village this mask was carved to represent a bush spirit. The mask is danced in village festivals honoring harvests, births, weddings, funerals, etc. Made from wood and homemade paint.
The Mossi people originated in Burkina Faso and their region has now spread to Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, and Togo. The Mossi are directly descendants did from the Mamprusi people and similar live in upper east Ghana.
The Mossi people have two classes: a political classed called Nakomse, and a spiritual class called Tengabisi. Only Tengabisi use masks, like this piece, and the Tengabisi use only figures in political celebrations.
